Ahhhh...where to begin. This past school year (07-08) was horrid. So much so that it is probably one of the big reasons why this blog sat untouched. Wild Man went downhill big time last year. In August 07, he was diagnosed with seizures based on an abnormal EEG and our description of what was going on clinically. He began the spiral of seizure meds, and failed one, ended up toxic on another (VERY SCARY) and was trialing another when we had a video EEG.
The video EEG showed no seizure activity and meds were not high enough to be therapeutic. What we went through last year is a long story, so let me give the short version here. I requested some lab work based on research I read. His carnitine levels came back shockingly low - bottomed out. He had a metabolic panel that showed he was also low in CoQ10, folate, and B vitamins. He has all the signs of a mito dysfunction of some sort, and is being supplemented with all four of those things.
Fast forward to today. Those supplements have been miracle workers and Wild Man has developed more in 2-3 months than he did in an entire year. There is no way to describe in words the difference in this child. I feel like we've been given a HUGE gift here...we feel so blessed.
Oh yeah, and he is off all seizure meds with no signs of a seizure in sight. ;)
