WFMW: Frugal Edition

So this week at the blog carnival over at http://www.wearethatfamily.com/ everyone is talking about frugality.

Since we started the adoption process, we have become super frugal in any way that we possibly know how to do. Last year, our church went through a journey called Consumed and it was around then that we read Dave Ramsey's book as well.

Because of that, we're always looking for ways to cut costs in our house while possibly being more "green" too. A couple of the more recent frugal tips in our house focus on the bathroom. We love foam soap in our house. It doesn't drip terribly, the kids don't waste as much, and it just works better for us. However, it also seems to disappear more quickly and can't be purchased as cheap as other kinds can with coupons. Finally, we purchased a foam soap at the grocery and have started refilling it with hand soap bought in bulk added to water. (I found this idea somewhere online, but can not remember where.) So about 1/3 soap and 2/3 water, shake to mix, and voila...we now have foam soap. The real work is in the dispenser.

The other thing I just learned...did you know you can wash plastic shower curtain liners? I always buy the heavy duty ones from Target to go behind our cloth curtain, but they still get moldy and gross after a while and require major cleaners (which give me a headache) to get them clean. I heard you could wash these and gave it a try. After a soak and a wash, it was all nice and clean!! (And it was pretty gross before that...Jim typically cleans the bathroom and he was gone a lot lately on business. What can I say? That was one thing I left for him until he returned. Wasn't that nice of me?)

I buy the magnetic plastic shower curtain liners from the dollar store, they last at least a year (always close the curtain so it dries completely).

I wash these too - even if you have hard water (like I do) you can get them clean. I use a bit of CLR in the washer and it removes everything so they look like new.

Now if you only had a solution for getting your child to remember to put the curtain on the INSIDE of the tub before showering each time, I'd be eternally grateful!

You'll probably get even more mileage out of a nylon or polyester fabric curtain--like umbrella fabric. They can be machine-washed many times, and they seem to be less prone to mildew than the vinyl ones.
